I'm Migration
people's workshop series
On June 14th, NIAAS gathered for the first part of the I'm Migration series! During the first dialogue, the group:
NIAAS has had 3 dialogues on the I'm Migration series so far.
The first workshop used small group and large group discussions as well as drawing and movement exercises to share stories and build solidarity between African Americans and Immigrants of Color.
The second workshop in the I'm Migration series brought the conversation to address "What does citizenship mean?" On September 13th, 2014, members gathered at the Julia Martin House to reflect on the events in Ferguson, the history of oppression against people of color and discuss the meaning of citizenship.
The third workshop was a Film Screening & Discussion of the documentary Citizen King. On January, 17th, 2015, members gathered to watch the documentary and reflect on the meaning of citizenship and rights today while considering the state of violence against communities of color and the mass protests after Ferguson & Staten Island. - connect our shared experiences as targets of racial oppression
- learned how we are ALL impacted by the injustices of incarceration, deportation, criminalization, and border control
- built relationships that support a movement for racial and economic justice
- prepared for a deeper follow-up dialogue on the meaning of citizenship
