MISSION STATEMENT
NIAAS creates opportunities and spaces for dialogue, relationships and solidarity among immigrants of color and African American communities of greater Boston.
VISION STATEMENT
To create a community where African Americans and immigrants of color have sustained relationships based on mutual understanding, respect and trust in order to achieve economic and racial justice at the local level.
VISION OF SUCCESS
NIAAS creates deep, long term changes in relationships; as a result we expect that success would be reflected in a more cohesive, accountable and sustainable social justice movement in which people of color head efforts to address the issues that affect them. Success will mean having bridged communities that are very diverse, each of which share a history of oppression and racism. Success will mean the raising up and articulation of the root causes of problems that sew divisions in communities. It will mean a unified response across communities to shared challenges to achieving social justice.
A touchstone of success would be to see people of color continuing to own, direct and plan this initiative in order to build their own understanding of and leadership in the movement. With these communities in the forefront, issue and neighborhood-based campaigns and organizations will be more effective in building more just, equitable, healthy and sustainable neighborhoods, schools, jobs and housing in greater Boston.
GOAL
To bring African Americans and immigrants of color together in spaces where we can foster and promote solidarity and relationship building among the communities to improve social justice and organizing work in greater Boston.
ROOTS of our NAME
Chosen by our core group members, NIAAS, both as an acronym and our name, was developed from the Swahili word, nia which means purpose.
